Practical, Sri Lanka-specific guidance. Scheme details and tariffs change — always confirm current terms with CEB, LECO or the Sustainable Energy Authority before making decisions.

ROOFTOP SOLAR

Choosing a connection scheme

PUCSL describes three ways to connect rooftop solar to the grid. As a rule of thumb from PUCSL, a home using about 200 units (kWh) a month needs roughly a 2 kW system.

SchemeHow it worksSurplusBest for
Net MeteringExported units are credited against units you use from the grid.No payment for surplus; credits roll forward.Homes sizing solar to their own use.
Net AccountingSame single-meter setup, but surplus exports are paid at an agreed rate.Paid for net surplus under an agreement.Homes and businesses expecting regular surplus.
Net PlusAll solar generation is exported and metered separately from your consumption.Paid for all generation; consumption billed as normal.Roofs larger than the building's own needs.
  1. STEP 1

Check your average monthly units on recent bills.

  2. STEP 2

Get quotes from registered installers; from 2028 technicians must hold NVQ certification.

  3. STEP 3

Choose a scheme and apply to CEB or LECO.

  4. STEP 4

Confirm current tariffs and terms with PUCSL before signing.

Cutting home energy use

Energy efficiency means using less energy for the same task — eliminating waste. It is the cheapest first step.

  • Air conditioning is often a home's largest load: choose an efficient, labelled unit and keep the setpoint moderate.
  • Replace remaining incandescent and CFL bulbs with LEDs.
  • Check energy labels when buying fridges, fans and air conditioners.

Energy management for businesses

SLSEA supports industries and commercial buildings in managing and reducing energy use.

  • Start with a walk-through energy audit: lighting, cooling, motors and compressed air.
  • Track monthly kWh and fuel use — the business estimator is a simple starting point.
  • Ask SLSEA about energy-management guidance and training for your sector.

Smarter transport

How we move is a large part of most footprints, and one of the easiest places to save money.

  • Buses and trains carry many people for the fuel of a few cars.
  • Combine trips and share rides where you can.
  • When replacing a vehicle, compare lifetime fuel and running costs, not only the price.
